Terpineol

Description

Extracted and purified from turpentine oil via fractionation, Turpineol is a clear, colorless liquid notable for its remarkably high, glycerin-like viscosity. While it is often used commercially to perfume soaps due to its pleasant lilac scent, it is highly valued as a specialized tool in the artist’s studio. For painters who prefer to work strictly with turpentine, adding Turpineol thickens the solvent just enough to prevent unwanted flowing and dripping, allowing for crisp, controlled brushstrokes. As an added benefit, oil paints modified with Turpineol will dry to a beautifully flat, full matte finish.
