Searching for religious freedom, the Schwenkfelders immigrated to the United States (Southwestern Penn.), in the early 1700’s. Education was an important part of their belief and they established schools. In 1790 they established the Hosensack Academy. In 1825 they joined with their neighbors to establish subscription schools. From their school fund they educated needy children. Their schools were open to all children. Religious activities and schools were the source for most Fraktur form. The Vorschrift, an illuminated text with a message, alphabet and numerals was usually given as a gift to a student. This Fraktur example is from a picture Fraktur and emulates the practice of copying prints or works of others at home “just for pretty.”
